Sour beer — The good, the bad, and the oh-my-god-it-burns

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Now that you’ve read my last post, you know a little bit about how sour beers are created. Now let’s talk examples. Here are my reviews of two very contrasting sour ales.
Monk’s Cafe Flemish Sour Ale
Monk’s Cafe is a well-known restaurant and bar in Center City Philadelphia that’s famous for its enormous selection of [...]

The Flying Pig Saloon – a Main Line haven for craft beer lovers

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Up until last September when we bought our house, Tim and I lived in a townhouse apartment in Malvern, PA. Malvern is located on the Main Line, a very uppity, somewhat snooty area of southeastern PA. Strangely enough, this wealthy town also happens to be the home of the most awesome hole-in-the-wall bar ever — [...]

Philly Beer Week: Part 3 – Meet the Brewer (Tröegs)

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

We attended yet another “Meet the Brewer” event at TJ’s last night, this time featuring Tröegs, one of my favorite breweries!
A special surprise to us was the firkin of Flying Mouflon that Tröegs had brought. Flying Mouflon is sort of like a barleywine-ized Nugget Nectar. Higher gravity, more hops, specialty grains tweaked.
The end [...]

Philly Beer Week: Part 2 – Meet the Brewer (Ommegang)

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

For our second “Meet the Brewer” event of Philly Beer Week, we went to TJ’s in Paoli. Monday’s event featured Brewery Ommegang. On tap, was Ommegang’s Three Philosophers, “Obamagang,” Abbey Ale, and Chocolate Indulgence, as well as Duvel Green. On hand, was brewer Wes Nick.
I started off with “Obamagang,” which was brewed [...]

Philly Beer Week: Part 1 – Meet the Brewer (Hoppin’ Frog) and the Philly Craft Beer Festival

Monday, March 9th, 2009

This week marks the glorious Philly Beer Week 2009. All through Philly and the surrounding suburbs, you can find yourself at any of about 700 events at over 100 different breweries, brewpubs, beer bars, and the like. Yowza!
We’re only attending a handful of the events (damn you, full-time job!), so this will just [...]

Colorado: Day 1 – Three breweries and a tap house

Friday, October 17th, 2008

We went to Colorado last week for GABF. Woo hoo! Time for me to chronicle our trip.
We flew out on Tim’s birthday, October 8th. While we were sitting at our gate, waiting to board the plane, we noticed that there were quite a few people there wearing beer-related t-shirts. It turned out that about half [...]

Teresa’s Next Door

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Last night, Tim and I decided it was time to pick up a case of Dogfish Head Punkin Ale at our favorite distributor, The Beer Yard. And since Teresa’s Next Door is right down the street from there, it was just too tempting for us to not pay a visit.
Teresa’s Next Door is, well, next [...]

A Franco-Belgian weekend, Homebrew #50, and a side of Mango Salsa

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

This was most definitely a beer-centric weekend.
Yesterday, my husband and I took the train into Old City, Philadelphia to check out Triumph Brewery. We’d been to the one in Princeton, but were told that the Philly location was better. Good advice!
I started off with the Saison, which tasted absolutely wonderful after wading through the crowds [...]
